Telecom Valley Awards
Alain Tixier from Okdak in Frejus (5th Prize for Innovation), Emmanuel Drouard from the Marseille School of Physics (1st Prize for Best Thesis) and Simulog-Astek Sud-est (10th Clipsat Prize) are the award winners who were honoured at the annual Telecom Valley evening on 25th November at Valbonne community hall.

Tourism@: WiFi and Digital Media to boost tourism
The Tourism and New Technologies fair taking place at the Cannes Festival Hall on 11th and 12th December has taken on even greater importance this year. Jacques Gros, former president of Telecom Valley, explains the challenges ahead. New technologies represent an opportunity to give a boost to the tourism industry on the Riviera, creating jobs that cannot be uprooted.

Tourism@ Prize 2003 at Virtualdive, multimedia for the diving community
The 10,000 euro Tourism@ Prize 2003, sponsored by Telecom Valley, was awarded to the company Virtualdive for the "Tryton" project by the president Jean-Marc Djian at the gala evening in the Salon des Ambassadeurs in the Cannes Festival Hall. The "Tryton" project, led by Alain Dinis, takes Internet to the underwater world.

Telecom Valley Gallery: a new dimension to the 3GSM World Congress
A new dimension has been added to Telecom Valley’s contribution to the 3GSM World Congress! The association has been for several years attending the largest mobile telephone event in the world that takes place in February in Cannes (more than 25,000 participants and the next event to take place between 23 and 26 February 2004). And its involvement is going from strength to strength. Through the Telecom Valley Gallery, companies in the region can meet representatives of the world mobile phone industry in premises very close to the Festival Hall.

The KMP project in full swing
The KMP project (Knowledge Management Platform) has entered the operational phase. Prototype 0, the aim of which is to describe and enter the skills of the pilot companies, has been in operation since September. Prototype 1, which is dedicated to scenario 1 entitled “having and giving greater overall visibility to the Telecom Valley community”, will be operational from January.

''Partners'' Commission: all systems go
Things are happening with the Telcom Valley Commissions. Take for example François Guichard’s "Partners" Commission: several work groups have met up since the last general assembly, and have made progress in their various activities.

Temex sets up it head office in Sophia Antipolis
In June, Jean-Yves Courtois was made chairman and CEO of Temex, which recently bought out Thales Microsonics of which he was the former CEO. The company has reorganised itself, redefined its strategy and in September moved its head office to the Sophia Antipolis Science Park and today has set itself new goals: to become a world class player in the sectors of Time and Frequency generation and filtering.

Jean-Yves Courtois: from research to company management
Jean-Yves Courtois, the former CEO of Thales Microsonics and the current chairman and CEO of Temex, started his career in basic research on leaving the highly prestigious Ecole Polytechnique in 1989. He wrote his thesis on quantum physics, obtained authorisation to carry out research in that area and worked with Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, the last French Nobel Prize winner.

CERAM Incubator Sophia Antipolis
On December 16, the Students’ Incubator at the CERAM Graduate School of Management marked its three years of existence by a review of its achievements and a presentation of some of its projects. The Incubator has so far accompanied and played host to 23 students’ projects which have led to the creation of 17 companies which are functioning today, ie. an excellent viability rate of 75%.

Thirty-five unemployed executives are to start working on projects that have lain "dormant" within Telecom Valley companies, be they large of small. The programme, developed by the association in partnership with institutions and administrative bodies in the employment sector, is a "first" in the region.

Eurécom adjusts to European harmonisation
The formula Degree-Masters-Doctorate is the new European model defined in the Bologna agreements, which, let us not forget, aim to harmonise the European further education system by introducing new diplomas that are common to all countries, and to create a university structure that will facilitate mobility within Europe.
